Let's work togetherFrequently asked questions
Let's make the first step feel clearer.
There is a lot to ask when you are considering pelvic health physical therapy. Start with these common questions, then reach out whenever you are ready.
Helpful to know
Answers, at your own pace.
Every person and every body is different. These answers offer a starting place, not a substitute for a conversation about your care.
01What is pelvic floor physical therapy?+
Pelvic floor physical therapy is a specialized kind of care that looks at how the pelvic floor works alongside the rest of your body. It can support concerns such as pain, leaking, pregnancy changes, postpartum recovery, bowel or bladder symptoms, and returning to activities you love.
02Do I need a referral to get started?+
No. In New York, you have direct access to physical therapy and do not need a referral for your first 30 days of care or 10 visits, whichever comes first. Reach out to Poppy if you have questions about getting started.
03What happens at my first appointment?+
Your first session begins with a conversation about your history, symptoms, routines, and goals. From there, your assessment and plan are shaped around what feels appropriate, useful, and comfortable for you.
04Will I have an internal pelvic floor exam?+
An internal exam is never automatic or required. Emily will explain any assessment options, answer your questions, and ask for your consent. You can decline, pause, or change direction at any time.
05What should I wear to my appointment?+
Wear something you can move comfortably in, such as activewear or other relaxed clothing. If there is anything specific that would help your visit, Poppy will let you know before you arrive.
06Can pelvic floor therapy help during pregnancy?+
Yes. Care during pregnancy can support movement, hip or back discomfort, pelvic pain, birth preparation, and confidence in your changing body. Sessions are adapted to your pregnancy and goals.
07Is it too late to start postpartum physical therapy?+
No. There is no single timeline for postpartum recovery. Whether you are weeks, months, or years after birth, it is always a good time to seek support for symptoms that are affecting your life.
08Do you work with men?+
Yes. Poppy offers private, respectful care for male pelvic health concerns, including pelvic pain, bladder or bowel symptoms, sexual health concerns, and movement-related goals.
09How many visits will I need?+
That depends on your symptoms, goals, and how your body responds over time. After getting to know you, Poppy will discuss a practical plan and revisit it together as your needs change.
10How do I book an appointment?+
Use the contact form to share a little about what you are looking for. Poppy will be in touch to discuss availability, next steps, and whether the practice is the right fit for you.
